The purpose of this social media audit is to take a deeper look at how Ulta Beauty is using Instagram and Facebook to connect with its audience and stay competitive in the beauty industry. Ulta Beauty is one of the top beauty retailers in the United States, offering both affordable and high-end products all in one place. Since the beauty industry is heavily driven by trends, influencers, and online conversations, social media plays a huge role in shaping brand image, driving demand, and building community. To conduct this audit, I analyzed both platforms by looking at engagement metrics like likes, comments, shares, and follower counts. I focused on identifying which posts performed the best and why, especially comparing influencer and event-based content to everyday promotional posts. I also looked at how often content was boosted and how engagement differed between Instagram and Facebook. The goal of reviewing this data was to better understand how effective Ulta Beauty’s content strategy is and where there are opportunities to improve. Based on the patterns I observed, I developed strategic recommendations aimed at increasing engagement, strengthening organic reach, and making content more platform-specific. Overall, this audit highlights both what the company is doing well and where adjustments could help improve performance.

When I looked at the engagement on Ulta Beauty’s Instagram page, I noticed a clear difference between their event-based content and their regular posts. The top-performing content mostly featured influencers and models, especially anything related to Ulta Beauty World. Those posts had a lot more likes, comments, and shares, which makes sense considering there were only 3,000 tickets available and about 3 million people trying to get one. That kind of exclusivity created hype and made people more likely to interact. However, their everyday posts seemed to receive fewer likes unless they included a popular brand or were part of a sponsorship. Overall, it seems like their audience is more engaged when the content feels exciting, exclusive, or influencer-driven rather than just routine promotional posts.

When looking at Ulta Beauty’s Facebook page, I noticed that the engagement really isn’t strong unless the post highlights a specific brand people already know. Compared to other platforms, the interaction feels lower overall. It also seems like they boost posts about every two weeks, which makes sense since organic engagement on Facebook isn’t as high. What stood out to me, though, is that more natural posts with real, everyday people tend to do better than overly staged or heavily promotional content. Since Facebook’s audience is generally older, relatable and realistic content connects more with them. Overall, engagement is there, but it depends more on brand recognition, paid boosts, and authenticity rather than hype.

After reviewing Ulta Beauty’s social media on Instagram and Facebook, I can see both strengths and weaknesses in their overall performance. One clear strength is their ability to create hype. The content tied to Ulta Beauty World and influencer collaborations performed the best. Posts with influencers and models generated the highest likes, comments, and shares. The exclusivity of only 3,000 tickets being available while millions tried to get them created urgency, which naturally increased engagement. They also perform well when featuring well-known beauty brands. When a recognizable brand is included, engagement is noticeably higher than on standard product posts. However, their weakness shows in their everyday content. Regular promotional posts without a big brand name or influencer tend to receive fewer likes and less interaction. On Facebook especially, engagement feels lower overall unless the post is boosted or highlights a specific brand. Even though the page has millions of followers, the interaction numbers do not always reflect that audience size. This suggests that while they have reach, they are not always maintaining strong organic engagement. To improve, I would suggest three strategies. First, they should bring more excitement into their regular posts by adding elements of exclusivity, such as limited-time offers or countdown-style promotions, even when it is not a major event. Second, they should tailor content more intentionally to each platform. Instagram should continue focusing on influencer-driven and trend-based content, while Facebook should lean into more relatable, real-life posts since that audience is older. Third, they should increase interactive content, such as questions, polls, or giveaways, to encourage more comments and shares. Overall, Ulta Beauty has a strong brand presence, but improving consistency and making everyday content more engaging could strengthen their overall social media performance.
